Online Professional Development

The Department has been piloting online teacher professional development courses since 2006, using MassONE as the delivery system. All courses follow the guidelines in the Massachusetts Recommended Criteria for Distance Learning Courses.

Partnership for Online Professional Development

The Partnership for Online Professional Development (POPD) is a 16-month, grant-funded pilot program designed to improve teaching practices, promote student learning, and provide capacity-building solutions through the use MassONE and other innovative practices. Courses are taught using Moodle, an open-source course management system. Eight districts were awarded competitive grants to work with curriculum specialists and online learning experts, in cooperation with the Department, to develop and teach these courses. The courses focus on improving student learning of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and K-12 Instructional Technology Standards. The courses have been offered statewide on a space-available basis, with preference given to educators from the districts receiving the POPD grants.

Partnership for Technology Professional Development

The purpose of this 15-month federal grant program was to support districts in working collaboratively with appropriate service providers to provide high-quality technology professional development using MassONE and/or in the use of MassONE, the state's online learning system. The goal of the professional development was to promote student learning, improve teaching practices, and provide districts with capacity-building solutions through the use of innovative educational practices and the use of MassONE. Professional development activities were delivered online, face-to-face, and through a combination of both approaches. Funding from this program supported the partnership of a high need district with three professional development providers to offer quality professional development to educators across the Commonwealth.
