Arts Education Advisory Council
The Arts Education Advisory Council advises the Commissioner and Board of Education on matters pertinent to the development of arts education in the Commonwealth. This includes examining statewide trends and needs, seeking public and professional input, identifying model programs, and making recommendations on policies and programs for the dance, music, theatre, and visual arts components of the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Framework.
Council members reflect a wide range of perspectives and activities in arts education. They include arts teachers and directors, practicing artists, professors of arts education, and staff members from arts organizations. All of the arts disciplines are represented.
Council Statement
This year, the Arts Education Advisory Council (AEAC) will work to address the following questions in response to the Commissioner's working goals and priorities for 2008 (2009)-2010:
- Supports for Students and Families (Meeting 1) How can/does the Board partner with arts educators to provide students and families with access to school and community-based supports to benefit educational opportunity? Though the focus of the Board for this topic is on social, health, and nutrition supports, we might examine relevant supports that impact and/or facilitate learning in the arts.
- State Leadership and Operations (Meeting 2). How can/does the Board partner with and/or build capacity to assist schools and districts improve/deliver effective and meaningful learning in the arts.
- Best Practices (Meeting 3) How do arts educators define, identify, and implement best practices?; and How can/does the Board partner with arts educators to develop/implement effective and meaningful best practices in arts education?
- Curriculum Integration (Meeting 3) How do we define, identify, and implement curriculum integration in arts education? And How can/does the Board partner with arts educators to develop/implement effective and meaningful curriculum integration in arts education?
