SABES Priorities for FY 2009
Joint Meeting of ACLS-SABES-SABES Advisory Group
January 17, 2008
Meeting Notes / Results
On January 17, the ACLS director and nine other ACLS staff members, together with the six SABES directors and key SABES Central Resource Center staff, met with fifteen representatives from the field to identify priorities for SABES' FY 2009 work plan.
Following an introductory message from ACLS Director Anne Serino on "supporting student success," the group of approximately 35 attendees broke up into four topical work groups, each to identify priorities in one of the following areas: (1) Reading and Writing, (2) Math, (3) Transitions/ Workforce Development and Post-Secondary Education and (4) Learning Disabilities.
Following report-outs from the four groups, the whole group voted across all of the priorities identified by the small groups, to identify the following top three priorities for SABES' FY 2009 work. They are:
- Transitions defined broadly to encompass Post-Secondary Education, Employment, and Occupational Skills. (19 votes)
- Math for non-math teachers / (Algebra across the levels) (16 votes)
- Develop a Training of Trainers on the soon-to-be-published guidebook, Serving Needs of Adults with Learning Disabilities. (12 votes)
Some of the items that were recommended by the smaller working groups, but that did not get enough votes to make it to one of the top 3 priorities, may be pursued anyway, depending on resources needed.
