Professional Development Information
The Professional Standards for Adult Basic Education Teachers define the pedagogical and other professional knowledge and skills required of ABE teachers. Just as the learning standards in the ABE Curriculum Frameworks address the question, "What do adult learners need to know and be able to do to function successfully in their roles as parent/family member, worker, citizen, and life-long learner?," so do the ABE Professional Standards articulate what teachers need to know and be able to do to successfully assist adult learners to achieve thelr goals. These Standards are used by the Department in reviewing the proficiency of applicants for an Adult Basic Education Teachers License.
The Professional Standards can be used outside of the licensure process, however. Teachers can use them to inform an individual professional development plans, and program directors can use them to inform hiring and teacher evaluation. SABES in increasingly aligning their work in curriculum and instruction with the Professional Standards, and notes such alignment in training announcements, to assist teachers identify trainings that address the standards they may be working on. The Professional Standards also serve to guide teacher preparation providers in preparing their candidates, and are used by the Department in reviewing ABE teacher preparation programs seeking state approval.
