Important New REEP Policies for FY04

There are several new REEP policies for programs to consider for this fiscal year. While we understand the difficulties associated with meeting these new requirements, it is extremely important that we continue to administer and score this standardized assessment correctly. If we are to maintain scores across the state that meaningfully represent our students' skills, then it is important to make sure all administrators and scorers are following the same test protocols.

  • REEP Training has now been divided into two parts:
    1. REEP Administration Training
    2. REEP Scoring Training

  • New to REEP? If you haven't been trained yet in the REEP, you'll need to take both the Administration Training and the Scoring Training. Look for a schedule of trainings at www.sabes.org; more trainings will be scheduled in the future.

  • Already trained? If you have been trained in REEP, you'll need to:
    1. Take the Administration Training. (This new training includes more emphasis on how to administer the pre-writing activities and the essay prompt.)
    2. You'll also need to recalibrate to the REEP rubric by scoring a new set of essays.

What Happens Next if You're Already Trained:
On September 17, eight new homework essays will be mailed out to you, and you will be asked to score the essays and return the essay score sheet to your SABES Regional Center by October 3. If you do not return your homework by this time, you will need to re-take the REEP scoring training. Your Regional SABES Curriculum and Assessment Coordinator will then review your work and send out a certificate and/or letter to you by October 31.

If you score the essays with 75% accuracy (6 out of 8 essays within one point of the actual score), your SABES Curriculum and Assessment Coordinator will send you a certificate certifying you for this fiscal year. If practitioners score less than 75% accuracy (5 out of 8 essays) your SABES Curriculum and Assessment Coordinator will work with you on your essay scoring. If 4 essays or less are scored correctly, then you will need to re-take the REEP Scoring Training.

We are aware that a significant outlay of staff time is needed to take part in refresher trainings. Not only is it vital that those who administer the test fully understand how to teach the warm-up before the essay writing, it is also vital that every scorer's inter-rater reliability remain high as we move into our second year of use.

Thank you for your continued hard work.
