PK-16 Program Support

Career/Vocational Technical Education
Administers the state law governing vocational technical education programs. The unit also administers the federal Perkins Vocational & Applied Technology Education Act.

College and Career Readiness
The secondary school improvement initiative is focused on improving high schools and is coordinating efforts to improve the college and career readiness of students in the Commonwealth through a grade PK-16 strategy.

English Language Learners
The Office of Language Acquisition works with districts to improve the academic achievement of English language learners (ELLs). This office also administers NCLB Title III funds and the Refugee School Impact grant.

Student and Family Support (SFS)
Academic Support, After-School and Out-of-School Time Programs (federally funded 21st Century Community Learning Centers and state funded ASOST), Behavioral Health and Public Schools, Bullying Prevention & Intervention, Service-Learning (SL), Full-Day Kindergarten Programs, Integrated Comprehensive Resources in Schools (ICRS), Social and Emotional Learning Curricula Guidelines, and Trauma-Sensitive Schools.

The Literacy Office is working to provide leadership for literacy by administering and evaluating literacy grant programs, and by linking literacy activities within the Department and with other agencies and organizations.

Nutrition, Health and Safety
Child Nutrition Programs contribute to the health and well being of the Commonwealth's children, by supporting nutritious meal service in day care centers, family day care homes, summer feeding programs and schools.

School Redesign
Supports the efforts of educators to improve the quality of educational services and supports delivered in schools.

Special Education in Institutional Settings
Provides special education services to youth with disabilities residing in state facilities operated by Departments of Mental Health, Public Health, Youth Services, and the County Houses of Correction.

Title I
Title I, Part A (Title I) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended (ESEA) provides financial assistance to districts and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards.
